01 — Overview

What is Fruit Merger?

Fruit Merger is a free browser puzzle in which you drop fruit into a box, let two of the same kind collide and merge into a bigger fruit, and keep the pile below the line at the top for as long as you can.

Fruit Merger opens with its rules in plain text. The how-to card reads: “Make fruits of the same kind collide to merge them and generate a bigger fruit. The bigger the fruit is, the more points you get. Don't let them reach the upper limit of the screen.” Under Controls it adds: “Tap and hold to move the cursor. Release to spawn the next fruit on top of it.”

The board is a tall sandy box. A red-and-white striped band across the top marks the limit, a small hand at the top carries the next fruit, and a ladder of about eleven fruits runs along the bottom of the screen, from small red fruit at one end to a watermelon at the other. The score sits beneath it, and in our session it went from 0 to 200 once the first merges landed.

The game has been in the GamePix catalogue since November 2024 and plays in a portrait 600×800 frame. The catalogue files Fruit Merger under fashion, which is a mistake: it is a physics merge puzzle, and one of the clearest examples of the fruit-dropping format on this site.

02 — How to play

How to play Fruit Merger

  1. 01

    Tap to start

The first screen of Fruit Merger is the how-to card. It ends with “Tap anywhere to start…”, and a single tap or click puts you in the box.

  2. 02

    Hold to aim

Press and hold. The hand at the top follows your pointer from side to side, carrying the fruit you are about to drop.

  3. 03

    Release to drop

Let go and the fruit falls into the Fruit Merger box, rolling and settling against whatever is already there.

  4. 04

    Match two of a kind

When two identical fruits touch, they merge into the next fruit on the ladder. Bigger fruit is worth more points.

  5. 05

    Check the next fruit

The tip on the card says the bottom of the screen shows the next fruit. Use it to decide where the current one should go.

  6. 06

    Stay under the stripe

Fruit that reaches the striped band at the top ends the game. Merge often so the pile keeps shrinking.

Controls

Fruit Merger is played with a single press. In the game's words, you “tap and hold to move the cursor” and “release to spawn the next fruit on top of it”; with a mouse that means holding the button, sliding left or right and letting go. The hand at the top of the box shows exactly where the fruit will fall. We used a mouse in a desktop browser; the instructions are written for touch, and the portrait layout suits a phone held upright.

Objective

Score as many points as possible before the fruit pile reaches the striped limit at the top of the box. Points come from merges, and the card is clear that a bigger fruit is worth more, so the aim is to climb the ladder toward the watermelon rather than to make lots of small matches. In our session the first merges in Fruit Merger took the score from 0 to 200.

Game modes & features

We found one mode, started from the tap-to-start card. Features we saw: the how-to card with controls and a tip, a hand cursor that carries the next fruit, a ladder of roughly eleven fruits printed along the bottom, a running score and a striped danger band. The catalogue listing describes “an ever-expanding board” and simple controls; we did not come across menus, power-ups or a level select.

Why play Fruit Merger?

Play Fruit Merger for the physics. Fruit rolls, bumps and settles like real objects, so a drop can trigger a chain you did not plan, and one well-placed small fruit can set off two merges at once. The rules fit on one card, a game lasts a few minutes, and the watermelon at the end of the ladder gives every session an obvious goal to chase.

03 — Tips & strategy

Fruit Merger tips

Beginner

Group the small fruit

In Fruit Merger, keep the smallest fruit together on one side of the box. Small pieces merge most often, and grouping them stops them wedging between big ones.

Slide before you release

The fruit only drops when you let go, so you can move the hand across the whole box first. Line up the drop instead of releasing on reflex.

Know the next fruit

The tip on the card points to the bottom of the screen for the next fruit. Check it before you place the current one.

Leave room above big fruit

Large fruit fills the box quickly. Keep the space above it clear so a matching piece can land on top of it.

Advanced

Build a size staircase

Arrange fruit from large to small across the box. A merge at the small end then rolls into the next size up, which is how chain merges start.

Use the roll

Fruit in Fruit Merger does not stop where it lands; it slides off round neighbours. Drop slightly to one side of a target and let it roll into place.

Keep the biggest fruit low

The pile grows toward the stripe. Put your largest fruit at the bottom and against a wall, where it uses the least height.

Merge before the band

When the pile nears the striped limit, stop building and take any merge you can. Every merge lowers the pile and buys another drop.

04 — Highlights

What makes Fruit Merger special

Fruit Merger gets the essential thing right: the fruit behaves like fruit. Pieces roll off one another, nudge their neighbours and settle in uneven heaps, so no two games play out the same way and a single drop can start a merge you did not see coming.

The presentation of Fruit Merger is just as direct. A sandy box, a striped warning band, a little hand carrying the next fruit and a ladder of about eleven fruits along the bottom tell you everything at a glance, and the watermelon at the end of that ladder is the goal each session works toward.

For the rule of Fruit Merger in a different shape, Gravity Merge drops orbs from a ring toward a core instead of into a box. If you prefer numbers, 2048 X2 Merge Blocks and Falling Blocks 2048 merge equal values in columns, and the 2048 page on this site is where that doubling idea began.

06 — FAQ

Fruit Merger FAQ

QWhat is the biggest fruit in Fruit Merger?

The watermelon. It is the last fruit on the ladder printed along the bottom of the screen, which runs through roughly eleven fruits from small red ones at the start. The card says bigger fruit earns more points, so working toward a watermelon is the main goal.

QHow does scoring work in Fruit Merger?

Points come from merges, and the game's own card says “the bigger the fruit is, the more points you get”. In our session the score stood at 0 until the first merges and then jumped to 200. We did not record the value of each individual fruit.

QWhen does a game of Fruit Merger end?

When the pile reaches the top. The card warns “Don't let them reach the upper limit of the screen”, and that limit is marked by a red-and-white striped band across the top of the box. Merging often keeps the pile low and the game going.

QHow do you drop fruit in Fruit Merger?

Press and hold to move the hand at the top of the box, then release. In the game's words: “Tap and hold to move the cursor. Release to spawn the next fruit on top of it.” With a mouse, hold the button, slide and let go.

QHow do you get chain merges in Fruit Merger?

In Fruit Merger, line fruit up by size so that one merge rolls into a matching neighbour. Because the fruit behaves physically, a newly merged piece settles against whatever sits beside it, and if that is the same kind, a second merge follows straight away.

QIs Fruit Merger the same as the Suika watermelon game?

No. Fruit Merger is an independent game that uses the rules made popular by Suika Game, Aladdin X's 2021 fruit puzzle: drop fruit into a box, merge pairs and work up to a watermelon. It has its own art, a sandy box and a hand cursor, and runs free in the browser.

QCan you play Fruit Merger on a phone?

It is designed for touch: the controls on its card are written as “tap and hold”, and the layout is portrait 600×800. We tested Fruit Merger in a desktop browser with a mouse rather than on a phone, so we can confirm the controls but not how it feels on a small screen.

QWhat games are similar to Fruit Merger?

Gravity Merge drops orbs from a ring toward a core with the same two-of-a-kind rule. 2048 X2 Merge Blocks and Falling Blocks 2048 merge numbers in columns, and 2048 Cube Run lets you merge cubes while racing down a track.
