01 — Overview

What is 3D Pinball - Space Cadet?

3D Pinball - Space Cadet is a browser version of the space-themed pinball table that shipped with Windows in the 1990s: you launch a ball with the plunger, keep it in play with two flippers, and work through missions to raise your rank. This build is distributed through the GamePix catalogue and runs in a browser tab with nothing to install.

Anyone who used a Windows PC around the turn of the century will recognise it at once. The table fills the left of the screen, drawn at an angle as if you were standing at the front of the cabinet. The right-hand panel carries the Space Cadet logo, the ball number, the player number, the score and a message window that opens every game with the same two words: Awaiting Deployment.

Even the window furniture is here. A menu bar across the top reads Game, Options and Help, and the Options menu lists the same entries the desktop version had — Show Menu, Select Players, Player Controls and Game Data. One addition gives away the modern port: a small keyboard icon in the corner that opens an on-screen keyboard, so the Space Cadet table can be played on a device with no physical keys.

The table was added to GamePix in 2024 and runs in an 800×600 frame. The original is nearly thirty years older than that, and the fact that it still holds attention says a good deal about how well the Space Cadet table was designed.

02 — How to play

How to play 3D Pinball - Space Cadet

  1. 01

    Pull the plunger

The ball starts in the launch lane on the right of the table. Hold the space bar to draw the plunger back and release it to fire; holding for about two seconds gave a full-strength launch in our session.

  2. 02

Keep the ball up with the flippers

Two flippers guard the drain at the bottom of the table. Swing the one the ball is rolling towards and send it back up the playfield.

  3. 03

    Watch the message window

The lower box on the right-hand panel starts at Awaiting Deployment and changes as the table has things to tell you. Read it between shots.

  4. 04

    Start a mission

The table is built around missions that ask for particular shots. Completing them is what moves you up the ranks the game is named for.

  5. 05

    Nudge the table

The cabinet can be bumped to change the path of the ball. A bump at the right moment rescues a ball heading straight for the drain.

  6. 06

    Check or change your keys

Open Options and choose Player Controls, or press F8, to see which key does what and reassign any of them before your next ball.

Controls

Space Cadet is a keyboard game. The space bar works the plunger: hold to pull back, release to launch. The flippers and table bumps are on separate keys — the original defaults put the left flipper on Z and the right flipper on the forward slash — and the exact assignments are listed under Options, Player Controls, which also opens with F8. On a phone or tablet, tap the keyboard icon in the top-left corner to bring up an on-screen keyboard with the full set of letter and number keys, and press the same keys there.

Objective

Score as many points as you can before your last ball drains. The panel on the right shows the ball you are on, the player number and the running score, which starts at zero. Points come from bumpers and targets, but the larger rewards in Space Cadet come from finishing missions and climbing in rank, so a long game is a matter of choosing shots rather than simply surviving.

Game modes & features

The menu bar gives access to everything. Under Options you will find Show Menu, with F9 as its shortcut, Select Players, Player Controls on F8, and Game Data. Help holds an About Pinball entry. Select Players means the table can be shared, with the panel showing whose turn it is. The table art itself carries the names of the original studios, Cinematronics and Maxis, along its bottom edge.

Why play 3D Pinball Space Cadet?

Play it for a full-depth table rather than a simple score attack. Space Cadet has lanes, ramps, bumpers, targets and a mission structure that takes real time to learn, and it rewards aim in a way that few browser pinball games do. For many players it is also a piece of their own history, and it is a pleasure to find that the ball physics hold up.

03 — Tips & strategy

3D Pinball - Space Cadet tips

Beginner

Open Player Controls first

Press F8 before you launch your first ball. Seeing the flipper and bump keys written down takes ten seconds and saves a wasted ball spent hunting for them.

Hold the space bar long enough

A quick tap barely moves the plunger. Hold the space bar until the plunger is fully drawn, then let go, so the ball clears the launch lane with pace.

Flip one side at a time

Pressing both flipper keys together opens the drain between them. Use only the flipper the ball is coming to.

Hold a flipper up to catch the ball

Keeping a flipper key held leaves that flipper raised. A slow ball will come to rest against it, which gives you a moment to pick your next shot instead of reacting.

Advanced

Aim with timing, not force

Where the ball is along the flipper when you press decides where it goes. Struck near the base it travels across the table; struck near the tip it goes up the same side.

Work on one mission at a time

The message window tells you what the table wants next. Take those shots in order rather than hitting whatever is nearest, because finished missions are what raise your rank.

Bump early and lightly

A table bump changes the path of the ball only a little, so it has to be used before the ball reaches the danger area. One well-timed nudge beats three late ones.

Learn the launch

The strength of the plunger pull changes where the ball enters the table. Try a few different holds on the space bar and note which one puts the ball somewhere useful.

04 — Highlights

What makes 3D Pinball - Space Cadet special

Space Cadet remains the best-known video pinball table for a reason: it is dense. Every part of the playfield does something, the missions give a game a shape beyond chasing a number, and the rank system means there is always a next step. Tables made decades later rarely pack in as much.

This browser build keeps the character of the original intact, down to the menu bar and the wording in the message window. The on-screen keyboard is a thoughtful addition for touch devices, though a physical keyboard is still the better way to play a table that expects a finger on each flipper and a thumb on the plunger.

It also fits neatly into the rest of this site. Pinball and brick breakers share a single idea — one ball, kept alive from the bottom of the screen — and the classic Brick Breaker on our home page is the paddle version of the skill Space Cadet teaches with flippers. Fantasy Star Pinball and Pinball Legends offer lighter, portrait-format tables for a phone.

06 — FAQ

3D Pinball - Space Cadet FAQ

QWhat are the controls for 3D Pinball Space Cadet?

Hold the space bar to pull the plunger and release it to launch. The flippers and table bumps use separate keys, with Z and the forward slash as the original flipper defaults. Options, then Player Controls — or F8 — shows the full list and lets you change it.

QWhat game is Space Cadet pinball from?

It was released on 24 August 1995 as 3D Pinball for Windows – Space Cadet, part of Microsoft Plus! 95. The table was developed by Cinematronics and came from Full Tilt! Pinball, published by Maxis. It was then included with Windows up to Windows XP.

QWhy was Space Cadet pinball removed from Windows?

Windows XP was the last consumer version to include it. Microsoft engineer Raymond Chen described a collision-detection bug that appeared when the game was moved to 64-bit Windows. He later wrote that the bug was eventually fixed, so the full reason it was dropped is not as clear-cut as often told.

QHow do you launch the ball in Space Cadet pinball?

Hold down the space bar. The plunger draws back for as long as the key is held, and releasing it fires the ball up the launch lane. In our session a hold of about two seconds cleared the message window and put the ball into play.

QHow do you change the keys in Space Cadet pinball?

Open the Options menu at the top of the game and choose Player Controls, or press F8. The dialog lists the key for each flipper, each table bump and the plunger, and any of them can be reassigned.

QIs this the official Space Cadet pinball?

No. It is a third-party browser build distributed through the GamePix catalogue. It reproduces the 1995 table, including the Cinematronics and Maxis names in the table art, but it is not published or endorsed by Microsoft or the original studios.

QCan you play Space Cadet pinball on a phone?

It can be done. The keyboard icon in the top-left corner opens an on-screen keyboard with letter and number keys, which stands in for a physical one. The table expects several keys at once, though, so a desktop or laptop is much more comfortable.

QWhat games are similar to 3D Pinball Space Cadet?

Fantasy Star Pinball and Pinball Legends are the other flipper tables on this site, both in portrait format for phones. For the same one-ball skill with a paddle and a wall of bricks, try the classic Brick Breaker on our home page.
