01 โ€” Overview

What is DD Blocky?

DD Blocky is a free browser puzzle in which each level shows an empty outline and a small tray of coloured pieces, and you drag the pieces into the outline until every cell is covered.

DD Blocky is not a line-clearing game, whatever its catalogue description suggests. The GamePix listing talks about filling rows and columns, but the version that loads has no endless board and no clears: when we played, Level 1 was a single dark square, roughly four cells by four, with three pieces to fit inside it.

The title screen simply reads BLOCKY, in white capitals with a mirrored reflection beneath, over a bright blue background. Two buttons sit under the name, NEW GAME and CONTINUE; the second presumably resumes a saved level, and we used the first.

Inside a DD Blocky level the screen is just as plain: a 'Level 1' header with home, sound and restart buttons, the outline in the middle, and the tray along the bottom. DD Blocky has been in the GamePix catalogue since October 2020 and is designed for a portrait screen.

02 โ€” How to play

How to play DD Blocky

  1. 01

    Start a new game

Choose NEW GAME on the BLOCKY title screen. DD Blocky opens Level 1 straight away, with the outline in the centre and the pieces in a tray below it.

  2. 02

    Study the outline

Look at the shape of the dark area before touching anything. Corners and narrow arms of an outline accept only a few of the pieces, so they decide where everything else can go.

  3. 03

Look at every piece in the tray

Level 1 gave us three: a blue L, a green piece and a pink piece. Picture how each would sit in the outline before you commit.

  4. 04

    Drag a piece into place

Press on a piece, move it over the outline and release. It snaps onto the grid cells, and a faint ghost of it stays in the tray to show it has been used.

  5. 05

Restart if you box yourself in

If the remaining pieces no longer fit the remaining gap, press the restart button in the top bar of DD Blocky and try a different order.

  6. 06

    Fill every cell

The level is solved when the outline is completely covered. We placed the blue L and the green piece but did not finish the level, so we cannot describe the completion screen.

Controls

Everything in DD Blocky is done by dragging. Hold a piece in the tray, carry it into the outline and let go; it locks to the cells beneath it. The top bar holds three round buttons โ€” home to leave the level, sound to mute it, and a circular-arrow restart that puts the level back to its starting state. We played with a mouse; the portrait layout and the single gesture should carry over to a finger on a touch screen, but we did not test one.

Objective

Cover the whole outline with the pieces you are given. There is no score counter on the Level 1 screen, no timer and no line to clear, so the only measure is whether the shape is full. Each level of DD Blocky is a self-contained puzzle with a definite answer, which is the opposite of the open-ended survival of most block games on this site.

Game modes & features

DD Blocky has one mode: a run of numbered levels, started with NEW GAME, with CONTINUE on the title screen for returning players. We did not count the levels and the listing does not give a number, so we will not guess at one. Level 1 used a small square outline and three pieces in blue, green and pink, and placed pieces left a ghost outline in the tray. Restart is always one click away in the header.

Why play DD Blocky?

Play DD Blocky for a puzzle that has an answer. Line-clearing games ask you to cope with whatever arrives; this one gives you everything at the start and asks you to work out how it fits together, which is closer to a tangram or a jigsaw. There is no clock and no penalty for restarting, so it suits slow, thoughtful play โ€” and anyone who finds endless grids stressful.

03 โ€” Tips & strategy

DD Blocky tips

Beginner

Start with the corners

Corner cells of an outline can only be reached by pieces with a matching corner. Fill them first and the middle of DD Blocky's shapes usually takes care of itself.

Place the awkward piece first

An L or a zigzag has fewer possible positions than a square. Put it down while the outline is still empty and you have the most options.

Use restart freely

There is no score to lose, so restarting costs nothing. Two or three attempts with different starting pieces are often faster than staring at a half-filled outline.

Watch the ghosts in the tray

A used piece leaves a faint outline behind. Glance at the tray to see at once which pieces are still available.

Advanced

Match gaps to pieces

Compare the size of each empty gap with the pieces that are left. A three-cell hole can only take a three-cell piece, so if none remains, something placed earlier has to move.

Look for the forced move

Often one gap in the outline accepts only one piece in one position. Find that forced placement and the rest of the solution tends to follow from it.

Work from the edges inwards

Edges are where mistakes show first, because a piece that would overhang the outline will not fit. Seal the border and the interior becomes a smaller, easier puzzle.

Think in pairs

Two small pieces can often cover the space of one large one. When a big piece will not fit, ask whether two others in the tray would fill the same cells.

04 โ€” Highlights

What makes DD Blocky special

DD Blocky is the calmest game in this site's block puzzle collection. There is no timer, no score and no board slowly filling up, only a shape and the pieces for it, and that makes it a good choice for younger players or for anyone who wants a puzzle rather than a race.

It also corrects a common misunderstanding. The catalogue description promises rows and columns, but DD Blocky is really a shape-fitting game, closer to a tangram than to the line-clearers around it. Knowing that in advance saves a confused first minute.

If you enjoy it, Puzzle Block on this site is the natural next game: it uses the same idea of filling an outline with pieces, across a map of levels. For contrast, Block Breaker turns the relationship around entirely โ€” there the blocks are already in place and you break them apart.

06 โ€” FAQ

DD Blocky FAQ

QIs DD Blocky a line-clearing game?

No. Despite a catalogue description about filling rows and columns, DD Blocky gives each level a fixed outline and a set of pieces, and you win by covering every cell. In our session nothing cleared and there was no endless board, just the shape to fill.

QWhat does Level 1 of DD Blocky look like?

A dark square roughly four cells by four in the middle of a blue screen, with a tray of three pieces beneath it: a blue L, a green piece and a pink piece. The header shows Level 1 with home, sound and restart buttons.

QDoes DD Blocky have a timer or a score?

Not on the screens we saw. The Level 1 view shows the level number and three buttons, but no clock and no points counter. The only goal is to fill the outline, so you can take as long as you like over each move.

QHow do you play DD Blocky?

Choose NEW GAME, then drag pieces from the tray into the outline. Each piece snaps to the grid and leaves a ghost in the tray. When the outline is completely covered the level is solved; use the restart button if the remaining pieces stop fitting.

QHow do you solve a hard level in DD Blocky?

Begin with the corners and narrow arms of the outline, place the least flexible piece first, and look for a gap that only one piece can fill. If you get stuck, restart โ€” it costs nothing โ€” and try a different starting piece.

QIs DD Blocky like Tetris?

Only in its shapes. Tetris, created by Alexey Pajitnov in the mid-1980s, drops pieces into a well and clears full rows. DD Blocky has nothing falling and nothing clearing: every level is a still outline that you fill with the pieces provided, more like a tangram.

QCan you play DD Blocky on a phone?

It is laid out in portrait and every move is a single drag, which suits a touch screen well. We played DD Blocky in a desktop browser with a mouse, however, not on a phone, so we cannot vouch for touch accuracy on small screens.

QWhat games are similar to DD Blocky?

Puzzle Block is the closest, with outlines to fill across a map of levels. For a line-clearing alternative, try Color Blocks, TenTrix Blast or Jewel Blocks Quest, which use the same kind of pieces on open grids where full rows disappear.
