What is 8x8 Block Puzzle?
8x8 Block Puzzle is a free browser block puzzle in which you place wooden pieces, three at a time, on an eight-by-eight board and clear full rows and columns while a timer bar runs down above the grid.
The title screen is plain and confident: the words 8X8: BLOCK PUZZLE in bold blue letters across a red-brown brick wall, with a single round play button beneath them. One press and 8x8 Block Puzzle takes you straight to the board, with no mode screen or level map in between.
The 8x8 Block Puzzle game screen keeps the same brick backdrop. A pause button sits top-left, the SCORE in the centre, and a sound button and a trophy icon on the right. Under them runs a thin bar with a clock icon at its left end; it shrank between our screenshots. The board below is a white-framed grid of dark tiles, and three wooden pieces wait beneath it.
Along the bottom runs a banner with a gift icon that reads 'buttons for rotating shapes for advertising rewards', meaning that turning a piece is an extra unlocked by watching an ad. 8x8 Block Puzzle has been in the GamePix catalogue since February 2024 and plays in a portrait 600ร800 frame.
How to play 8x8 Block Puzzle
- 01
Press play
Tap the round play button under the brick-wall title. The board appears at once, with three wooden pieces lined up underneath it.
- 02
Look at all three pieces
Before you move anything, check the shapes in the 8x8 Block Puzzle tray. They all have to fit on the board, and the order you place them in matters.
- 03
Drag a piece onto the board
Press on a piece, drag it over the grid and release it where every cell lands on an empty tile. In our session a fresh set appeared once all three were placed.
- 04
Complete rows and columns
According to the catalogue listing, full rows and columns clear. Five placements in our session left the score at 0, which suggests points come from completed lines.
- 05
Watch the timer bar
The bar with the clock icon shrinks as you play. We did not let it run out, so we cannot say exactly what happens when it empties.
- 06
Keep space for the next set
Leave room on the board after every placement. A run of 8x8 Block Puzzle depends on always having a home for the next three pieces.
Controls
8x8 Block Puzzle is controlled by dragging. With a mouse, press on a wooden piece, carry it over the board and let go; on a touch screen the same press, drag and release gesture should work. The pause button is in the top-left corner and the sound toggle in the top-right. Rotation is not part of the basic controls: the banner at the bottom explains that the buttons for rotating shapes are a reward for watching adverts. We did not use them, so every piece in our session went in exactly as it was dealt.
Objective
Fill whole rows and whole columns of the eight-by-eight board so they clear, and keep enough free space for every new set of three pieces. The catalogue listing describes the game as endless play aimed at high scores. In our session the score stayed at 0 through five placements without a completed line, so in 8x8 Block Puzzle the points appear to come from clears rather than from simply putting pieces down. The timer bar adds a second pressure on top of the board.
Game modes & features
There is a single board and no mode select. The features we saw are the 8ร8 grid with its white frame, wooden pieces dealt three at a time, the shrinking timer bar with its clock icon, a SCORE readout, a trophy icon, pause and sound buttons, and the rewarded-ad banner for rotating shapes. The listing calls 8x8 Block Puzzle a relaxing mental challenge; the timer bar suggests a little more urgency than that description implies.
Why play 8x8 Block Puzzle?
Play it for the tightest board in the classic format. Eight cells a side leaves little room for careless placements, and the timer bar stops you from thinking forever, so every set of three pieces is a small decision under pressure. The wooden pieces and brick wall also give 8x8 Block Puzzle a warmer look than the neon and plain-grid games around it.
8x8 Block Puzzle tips
Plan all three before the first drop
Look at the whole set before placing anything. Put the piece with the fewest possible positions on the board first, and save the easiest fit for last.
Fill corners and edges early
On an 8ร8 board the centre is precious. Pack early pieces against the walls so the open middle can take larger shapes later.
Keep an eye on the clock icon
Glance at the timer bar between placements. It shrank steadily in our session, and a long pause over one move costs time you cannot get back.
Do not count on rotation
Turning pieces is offered as an advertising reward, not a basic control. Plan every placement in 8x8 Block Puzzle as if each piece must go in exactly as dealt.
Build towards double clears
Work on two neighbouring lines at once. A piece two cells deep can then complete both together, clearing a larger area than two single clears would.
Keep a three-by-three hole open
Leave one square area of nine cells empty whenever you can. It accepts almost every shape a block puzzle deals, so it works as an insurance space.
Avoid single-cell pockets
An empty cell surrounded on all sides can only be filled by a one-cell piece. On the 8x8 Block Puzzle board, every sealed pocket shortens the run.
Clear before the board half fills
Aim to complete a line before more than half the board is covered. With eight cells a side, waiting longer leaves too few positions for the larger pieces.
What makes 8x8 Block Puzzle special
8x8 Block Puzzle has the smallest board in the classic line-clear format, and that is the point. Sixty-four cells fill quickly, so the game rewards players who think a set ahead rather than placing each piece wherever it happens to fit. The timer bar makes those decisions quicker still.
It invites direct comparison with two siblings that share its board size. Color Blocks scores every cell you place and has no timer we could see; Block Crush Challenge wraps the same grid in coins and a daily calendar. If eight by eight feels cramped, TenTrix on this site uses a 10ร10 grid with room to breathe.
The presentation of 8x8 Block Puzzle is a small pleasure in its own right. Wooden pieces against a brick wall look closer to a tabletop game than an arcade one, which suits the deliberate pace of a block puzzle. The one sour note is the rotation banner: a feature many players would expect as standard is held back as an advertising reward.

8x8 Block Puzzle FAQ
QDoes 8x8 Block Puzzle have a timer?
Yes. A bar with a clock icon runs under the score and shrank between our screenshots. We stopped before it emptied, so we cannot say whether it ends a game of 8x8 Block Puzzle or simply costs points.
QCan you rotate pieces in 8x8 Block Puzzle?
Only as an extra. A banner at the bottom of the screen reads 'buttons for rotating shapes for advertising rewards', so rotation is unlocked by watching ads. We did not use it, and pieces otherwise go in exactly as they are dealt.
QHow many pieces do you get at a time in 8x8 Block Puzzle?
Three. They sit in a row beneath the board, and in our session a fresh set appeared once all three had been placed. Plan where the whole set will go before dropping the first.
QHow do you score points in 8x8 Block Puzzle?
By completing rows and columns. In our session five placements without a finished line left the score at 0, which suggests that placing a piece earns nothing on its own and that only clears add to the total.
QHow do you play 8x8 Block Puzzle?
Press play, then drag the three wooden pieces from under the board onto empty tiles. Fill whole rows or columns to clear them, keep an eye on the timer bar, and leave enough space for every new set.
QIs 8x8 Block Puzzle the same as Block Blast?
No. Block Blast! is a Hungry Studio game launched on iOS in April 2022. 8x8 Block Puzzle is an independent browser game in the same drag-and-drop line-clear genre, with its own timer bar, wooden pieces and rewarded rotation.
QCan you play 8x8 Block Puzzle on a phone?
It looks well suited. The game uses a portrait 600ร800 frame and needs nothing but dragging, which works naturally with a finger. Our session ran in a desktop browser, so we cannot vouch for how it behaves on any particular handset.
QWhat games are similar to 8x8 Block Puzzle?
Color Blocks and Block Crush Challenge share the same eight-by-eight board. TenTrix and TenTrix Blast offer a roomier 10ร10 grid, and Wood Block Puzzle has a similar wooden look with four modes to choose from.
