01 โ€” Overview

What is Block Buster?

Block Buster is a free browser block puzzle in which you drag pieces onto an 8ร—8 board, slot them into the gaps between blocks already in place, and complete rows to clear them, starting with a hand-guided tutorial.

There is no menu to get past. Once the GamePix loading card closes, Block Buster opens on a board that is already partly built: a column of yellow, blue, red, cyan and green blocks stands in the middle, a gap waits in it, and a white hand shows where the single piece under the board should go.

Its GamePix catalogue listing describes something different, namely falling blocks that you rotate, with modes called Classic Puzzle and Block Adventure. The game we loaded did not behave that way. Pieces did not fall; they waited beneath the board and moved only when dragged. This page describes the Block Buster we played and attributes the rest to the listing.

Block Buster runs in a landscape 800ร—600 frame, with the board centred in a field of blue, a crown and best score in the top-left corner and the current score above the board. It has been in the GamePix catalogue since November 2024. Our first clears in the tutorial took the score from 0 to 63.

02 โ€” How to play

How to play Block Buster

  1. 01

    Let the tutorial begin

Block Buster starts by itself once the loading card closes. The first board is already half built, with one gap to fill and a hand pointing at it.

  2. 02

    Follow the hand

The white hand shows the piece to move and the gap it belongs in. Copy that move exactly on your first few turns.

  3. 03

    Drag the piece into place

Press on the piece under the board, carry it up over the gap and release it. Every cell of the piece must land on an empty square.

  4. 04

    Complete the row

When a row is filled from wall to wall it clears and the score climbs. Our opening clears in the tutorial were worth 63 points in total.

  5. 05

    Take the next piece

A new piece appears below the board after each placement. After the first clears we were given a vertical bar and pointed at a gap in a column.

  6. 06

    Watch the crown

The crown in the top-left corner keeps your best score. Ours matched the 63 we had just scored, ready to be beaten on the next attempt.

Controls

Block Buster is a drag-and-drop game. With a mouse, press on the piece below the board, move it over the gap and let go; on a touch screen the same motion should work with a finger. In our session pieces did not fall and there was no rotate button, even though the catalogue listing talks about rotating falling blocks. We used no keyboard keys at all. Because the frame is landscape and the board sits in the middle of it, the playing area is compact, so drag slowly and drop precisely.

Objective

Fill rows completely so they clear, and keep the board from filling up. The tutorial starts you on a board with blocks already in place, so the job from the first move is to find the gap a piece completes rather than to build from nothing. After our first clears the next hint pointed a vertical bar into a gap in a column, which suggests columns count as well as rows. Clears raise the score shown above the board, and the crown records your best run of Block Buster.

Game modes & features

What we saw was the tutorial: a pre-built board, one piece at a time, a guiding hand, a live score and a best score marked with a crown. The catalogue listing names two modes, Classic Puzzle for high scores and Block Adventure with fresh obstacles, and describes falling blocks that rotate. None of that appeared during our session, which never left the drag-and-drop board. We would rather say so than describe a version of Block Buster we did not see.

Why play Block Buster?

Play it for the fastest start of any block puzzle here. There are no menus and no mode screens; the game hands you a half-finished board and a piece that fits, and within a few moves you have cleared lines and set a score to beat. It is a good choice for a two-minute break, or for someone who has never played a block puzzle and wants to be shown how.

03 โ€” Tips & strategy

Block Buster tips

Beginner

Copy the tutorial exactly

Put each piece where the hand points for the first few moves. The tutorial boards are arranged so those placements complete rows immediately.

Look for the one empty cell

On a pre-built board most rows are nearly full. Scan each row for its gaps and match them to the piece you have been given.

Drag slowly in a small frame

The board is compact inside the landscape frame. A slow, steady drag lands the piece where you intend far more reliably than a quick flick.

Use the crown as your target

The best score in the top-left corner is the number to beat. After a short run, start again and try to pass it in Block Buster.

Advanced

Match bars to lanes

A horizontal bar fills a gap in a row and a vertical bar fills a gap in a column. Read the orientation of each Block Buster piece before deciding where it can go.

Clear two lines with one piece

Look for places where one piece would finish two neighbouring rows at once. A double clear empties the board faster than two single ones.

Fill beside the towers

Blocks that start on the board form towers with ragged sides. Filling beside those towers often completes several rows in a single move.

Avoid sealing a gap

Never place a piece so that an empty cell becomes boxed in on all sides. With pieces arriving one at a time, a sealed cell may stay empty for the rest of the run.

04 โ€” Highlights

What makes Block Buster special

Block Buster and Block Breaker share half a name and the pleasure of clearing blocks, but they are opposite games. Block Breaker on our home page knocks a wall of bricks down with a bouncing ball; Block Buster asks you to finish rows of blocks so that they clear themselves. Playing one after the other shows how differently the same word can be used.

Among the block puzzles on this site, Block Buster is the most guided. Most of the others open on an empty grid and a tray of three pieces; this one opens on a partly built board with one piece and a hand to show you the answer. That makes it the gentlest starting point in the cluster, and a fast one.

Wood Block Puzzle also runs in a landscape frame, and it offers four modes from a menu where Block Buster offers none at all. For a portrait game with a similar feel, 8x8 Block Puzzle uses the same board size with three pieces at a time.

06 โ€” FAQ

Block Buster FAQ

QDo the blocks fall in Block Buster?

Not in the version we loaded. Pieces waited below the board and moved only when we dragged them. The GamePix catalogue listing describes falling blocks that you rotate, so the game may have changed since that text was written.

QDoes Block Buster have a tutorial?

Yes, and it starts immediately. The opening board is partly built, a white hand shows where each piece belongs, and following it clears rows straight away. Our first tutorial clears took the score from 0 to 63.

QHow big is the Block Buster board?

Eight columns by eight rows, set in the middle of a landscape 800ร—600 frame. On the first board a column of coloured blocks already stands in the centre, with gaps left for the pieces you are given.

QHow do you clear lines in Block Buster?

Drag a piece into a gap so that a row is filled from one side to the other. After the first clears the tutorial pointed a vertical bar into a column, which suggests full columns clear too.

QHow do you score points in Block Buster?

By clearing lines. The current score above the board rose from 0 to 63 over our first few tutorial clears, and the crown in the top-left corner kept that figure as our best.

QIs Block Buster the same as Tetris?

No. Tetris, released in the Soviet Union in 1985 according to Wikipedia, drops and rotates its pieces. Block Buster as we played it is a drag-and-drop game with no falling pieces, even though its catalogue listing describes rotating falling blocks.

QCan you play Block Buster on a phone?

Probably, though it is not ideal held upright. The game runs in a landscape 800ร—600 frame with the board in the middle, so a phone turned sideways will show it best. Dragging suits a touch screen, but our own test was on a desktop browser.

QWhat games are similar to Block Buster?

Wood Block Puzzle is another landscape block game, with four modes. 8x8 Block Puzzle and Block Crush Challenge use the same eight-by-eight board in portrait, and Color Blocks is the most minimal version of the idea.

Ready to play Block Buster?

Follow the hand, drag your first piece into its gap and clear the opening rows of Block Buster.
