01 โ€” Overview

What is Color Blocks?

Color Blocks is a free browser block puzzle in which you place star-studded shapes on an eight-by-eight grid, clear full rows and columns, and score a point for every cell you put down.

Color Blocks is the newest game in this site's block puzzle collection, published in the GamePix catalogue on 10 July 2026, and it looks it: a near-black background, a dark green-tinted grid, and pieces drawn as white stars inside neon outlines of orange, blue, pink, purple and green.

The title screen offers two buttons, NEW GAME and SETTINGS, and shows your BEST score underneath, which is 0 on a first visit. In play, the current score sits in large figures at the top with BEST in small letters beneath it, and a pause button waits in the corner. Three pieces sit under the board.

When we played Color Blocks, the scoring was easy to read. In one session a three-cell piece added 3; in another, a five-cell piece, a second five-cell piece and a three-by-three square took the score to 19, with BEST updating alongside it. The catalogue listing's advice is to clear columns or rows without leaving gaps and to avoid running out of space.

02 โ€” How to play

How to play Color Blocks

  1. 01

    Choose NEW GAME

Start from the Color Blocks title screen. SETTINGS sits underneath NEW GAME, and your BEST score is shown below both.

  2. 02

    Look at the three pieces

Three star-cell shapes appear beneath the eight-by-eight grid. They range from short bars to a full three-by-three square.

  3. 03

    Drag one onto the grid

Press on a piece, move it over empty cells and release. Each cell you place adds a point straight away, so the counter climbs with every move.

  4. 04

    Complete rows and columns

Fill a whole row or column to clear it and win the space back. The catalogue listing stresses doing this without leaving gaps.

  5. 05

    Make room for big squares

The three-by-three piece needs nine empty cells in a block. Keep an area that size free whenever you can.

  6. 06

    Play until the board locks

Keep placing and clearing for as long as pieces fit; the listing describes the end as running out of space. BEST in Color Blocks updates live as you go.

Controls

Color Blocks needs only a pointer. Press on a piece below the board, drag it over the grid and release, and it settles onto the cells under it. A pause button in the top corner stops play, and the SETTINGS button on the title screen holds the game's options, which we did not explore. We used a mouse in a desktop browser. The portrait layout and single drag gesture should work with a finger as well, though we did not test a phone.

Objective

Keep the eight-by-eight board open for as long as possible while the score climbs. Every placed cell is worth a point โ€” we watched 3, then 5, then 19 appear as pieces went down โ€” and complete rows and columns clear to make room for more. The GamePix catalogue listing sums up the goal of Color Blocks as filling the grid without leaving gaps and avoiding running out of space.

Game modes & features

We found a single mode behind the NEW GAME button of Color Blocks, with SETTINGS as the only other option on the title screen. Pieces come in several sizes, from short bars to a three-by-three square, and each is drawn as white stars inside a coloured outline. The score is shown in large figures at the top, with BEST beneath it updating live, so you see the moment you set a new record. There is no timer on screen.

Why play Color Blocks?

Play Color Blocks for clarity. Its neon pieces stand out sharply on the dark board, the point-per-cell scoring rewards every move rather than only the big clears, and the eight-by-eight grid is small enough that each decision matters. With nothing on screen except the board, the score and three pieces, it is one of the purest drag-and-place puzzles on the site.

03 โ€” Tips & strategy

Color Blocks tips

Beginner

Bank the easy points

Every cell you place scores a point in Color Blocks, so a large piece placed safely earns more than a small one. Do not hold back big shapes out of caution.

Fill along the walls

Rows and columns at the edge of the grid are bounded on one side, which makes them easier to complete. Start there and keep the centre flexible.

Guard a three-by-three space

The nine-cell square is the piece most likely to have nowhere to go. Leave one empty three-by-three block for as long as you can.

Clear before the board crowds

On an eight-by-eight grid, space runs out quickly. Finish a line as soon as it is possible rather than waiting to set up something bigger.

Advanced

Think in columns too

The listing mentions clearing columns as well as rows. Watching both directions doubles the number of lines you can aim at with each piece.

Make clears cross

A single piece that completes a row and a column at once frees up to fifteen cells on an eight-by-eight board. Arrange near-complete lines so that they intersect.

Order the tray

Place the least flexible of the three pieces first. Long bars and big squares have the fewest legal spots, so they should go down while those spots exist.

Close single holes early

A lone empty cell can only be filled by a one-cell piece. If none appears, that cell keeps its row and column from ever clearing, so avoid creating one.

04 โ€” Highlights

What makes Color Blocks special

Color Blocks is the newest block puzzle on the site and the most minimal. A dark board, neon outlines and white stars are all it uses, and that restraint makes the grid easy to read even when it is nearly full.

Color Blocks has unusually transparent scoring. Because each placed cell adds a point, the counter moves on every turn and you always know where the points came from: in our sessions a three-cell piece gave 3, and pieces of five, five and nine cells gave 19 between them.

For a different flavour of the same idea, try Jewel Blocks Quest, which adds a recharging undo, or 8x8 Block Puzzle, which puts a timer bar over a board of the same size. If you would rather break blocks than place them, Block Breaker on this site is the classic other side of the coin.

06 โ€” FAQ

Color Blocks FAQ

QHow big is the grid in Color Blocks?

Eight cells by eight. The board sits in the middle of a near-black screen with the score above it and three pieces below. Pieces range from short bars to a three-by-three square, which takes up more than a tenth of the board on its own.

QHow does scoring work in Color Blocks?

Every cell you place earns one point. In our sessions a three-cell piece scored 3, and a five-cell piece, another five-cell piece and a nine-cell square together scored 19. Clearing rows and columns frees space; we did not measure a separate bonus for a clear.

QDoes Color Blocks have a timer?

No timer appeared on screen when we played Color Blocks. The HUD shows the current score in large figures, BEST beneath it and a pause button, and nothing else, so you can take as long as you like over each placement.

QHow do you play Color Blocks?

Choose NEW GAME, then drag the three pieces below the grid onto empty cells. Fill complete rows and columns to clear them, keep space for large shapes, and carry on until nothing fits. Your top result is kept as BEST.

QHow do you get a high score in Color Blocks?

Place big pieces when they fit, since every cell scores; keep a three-by-three area free for the square; and set up rows and columns that cross so one piece clears both. Above all, avoid single empty cells that can never be filled.

QIs Color Blocks the same as Block Blast?

No. Color Blocks is an independent browser game published in July 2026, while Hungry Studio's Block Blast! is a mobile app first released in 2022. They share the drag-and-place, row-and-column idea; Color Blocks runs without an install and scores a point for every cell placed.

QCan you play Color Blocks on a phone?

Probably well. Its portrait layout, three-piece tray and single drag gesture are all made for touch screens. We played Color Blocks in a desktop browser with a mouse, not on a phone, so we cannot confirm how precise the dragging feels under a finger.

QWhat games are similar to Color Blocks?

Block Crush Challenge and 8x8 Block Puzzle also use eight-by-eight boards. Jewel Blocks Quest adds an undo that recharges, TenTrix Blast offers four modes on a ten-by-ten grid, and Blocks Puzzle adds a fifteen-minute countdown.
